Many familiar modern instruments (including the violin, guitar, lute and keyboard instruments), developed into new forms during the Renaissance responding to the evolution of musical ideas, presenting further possibilities for composers and musicians to explore.

Purely instrumental music included consort music for recorder or viol and other instruments, and dances for various ensembles (haut = loud, outdoor instruments / bas = quiet, intimate instruments)

The vihuela is a guitar-shaped string instrument from 15th and 16th century Spain usually with six doubled strings.

Vihuelas were tuned identically to their contemporary, the famous Renaissance lute (the most important instrument for secular music during the period)
